The first procedure to deal with the first stage of gum disease is scaling and root planing (also known as SRP), which stabilizes the health of the mouth by deep cleaning beneath the gumline, then evening the tooth enamel to limit future deposits. After one or several scaling and root planing procedures at Vista Ridge Dental Care in Erie, CO by our dentists, the gums and teeth are often cured and the patient'ss concerns will begin to clear up.
"I've been using them for 6 years now, and always get excellent care and advice. I went in for a teeth cleaning, and the hygienist took the time to explain what she was seeing, and then did an outstanding and thorough job of cleaning my teeth. Everyone has always been extremely friendly over the years."- B.D. / Google / May 03, 2019

"Just gotta say so far this place is amazing! I had taken my daughter to another dentist to get a quote for some dental work and it was outrageous! Quoted me almost 2000. I took the same quote to Vista ridge and had them evaluate her teeth and I'm only paying $15. They are super friendly and really want to help. Thank you!"- J.B. / Yelp / Apr 27, 2019

What to Expect
For the scaling and root planing procedure, our dentists will apply local anesthesia on the needed areas. Sedation may be added to the anesthesia to help the patient keep comfortable and calm during the procedure. To get to all sections of the gum pockets and scrap off the plaque and tartar deposits, our dentists will use a manual scaling tool or an ultrasonic cleaning instrument. As soon as the gum pocket is thoroughly cleaned, our dentists will decrease the areas where plaque and tartar can become trapped by planing (smoothing) the surface of the tooth. After the procedure, the gums will begin to heal and reattach correctly to the tooth root. A few patients may have more than one treatment to get their best results.
After the scaling and root planing treatment is finished, patients sometimes experience some inflammation and/or bleeding of the gums for several days. To keep the mouth clean at home after the scaling and root planing procedure, patients should ask about proper techniques for brushing and flossing their teeth so they can follow the best home care routine. Patients should also be sure to schedule dental exams every year at Vista Ridge Dental Care or as advised by our dentists. Our dentists will often schedule a check up appointment several months after the procedure to assess the patient's condition.
Since scaling and root planing is generally a medically required treatment for gingivitis, standard dental insurance companies will cover part of all of the cost of the procedure. Vista Ridge Dental Care will call the patient's insurance company to calculate their precise coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. Patients can also inquire about payment options and financing plans in their consultation with our dentists.
